Hypertension Hotspots: Dashboarding the Disease

Some Background on the Study
The BRFSS has been conducted by all state health departments since 1984, and two hypertension questions were added in 2005, which continue to be asked in odd years.  The first question is “Have you ever been told by a doctor, nurse, or other health professional that you have high blood pressure?”  If the reply is yes, then the second question is asked “Are you currently taking medicine for your high blood pressure?” Age-adjusted prevalence of self-reported hypertension and age-adjusted proportion of those using antihypertensive medication were estimated for the 50 United States and the District of Columbia.  Hypertension and medication use were also reported by age group, gender, race/ethnicity and education, as well as tracked for changes over 2005, 2007 and 2009. In 2005 there were 356,112 respondents, 430,912 in 2007, and 432,617 in 2009. The percent change from 2005 to 2009 was provided for each state and each demographic subgroup.
